Pupil Premium
Burton Green Primary School recognises that all pupils, regardless of their background, should have equal access to a curriculum which will enable them to reach their potential. The pupil premium is a Government initiative that targets extra money to pupils from deprived backgrounds, which research shows underachieve compared to their peers.
The Government have used pupils entitled to Free School meals as an indicator for deprivation, and have deployed a fixed amount of money to schools per pupil, based on the number of pupils eligible for Free School meals. Looked after or the children of armed service personnel are also eligible for this increased funding.
The Government is not dictating how schools should spend this money, but are clear that schools will need to employ the strategies that they know will support these pupils to increase their attainment. Historically, there is a national trend of under-performance of children eligible for free school meals. The main purpose of Pupil Premium funding is to close the gap in attainment between these children and their peers, raising aspirations and helping them to reach their full potential.
At Burton Green Primary School, we endeavour to meet the needs of all our children, including those in receipt of Pupil Premium. This is carefully planned and involves:
- Monitoring and tracking the progress of all children, using this information to inform our teaching and learning and our use of a range of intervention strategies.
- Regularly reviewing our provision, delegating resources to allow leaders to target resources effectively.
Throughout the school there are a variety of barriers to learning, these include low attainment on entry, speech and language difficulties, working memory, SEND, behaviour, attendance, social deprivation and other general needs. Not all of our Pupil Premium children have barriers to learning however they are tracked in the same way. We use our Pupil Premium funds to cater for all our children and they all benefit from the funding. This may be through interventions, personalised small group time, uniform, sports clubs and school trips, breakfast club, ELSA support and access to a Pastoral Support Worker frequently.
PE and Sport Premium
At Burton Green, we recognise that all pupils, regardless of their background, should have access to a curriculum which will help them to reach their potential.
The premium must be used to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of primary-aged pupils to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles. Schools can choose how they use the funding, for example to:
- hire specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers during PE lessons
- support and involve the least active children by running after-school sports clubs and holiday clubs
- provide resources and training courses in PE and sport for teachers
- run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
- run sports activities with other schools
Accountability
Since September 2013, Ofsted inspections report on PE and sport provision and on how schools spend their additional funding. The Government also holds schools accountable by requiring them to publish on their websites, details of how they spend (or will spend) their PE and sport grant. They must also include detail about the impact this funding has on pupils’ PE and sport participation and attainment.
Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer. This means that you should use the Primary PE and Sport Premium to:
- develop or add to the PE and sport activities that your school already offers
- build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years
